Mountain Rose Herbs

Quality comes down to three very simple things. Color, aroma, and flavor. Those are the three most important things to me. When you talk about quality, there are several different issues that come up. One of them is the organoleptic of the material. Organoleptic testing is using our senses. It’s using our sight, our touch, our smell, our taste, similar to the wine industry or the food industry. We’re looking at everything meticulously.

Physical aspects, we’re looking at microbial aspects. As the company has grown, we’re definitely expanding what we can do being an industry leader. We have one of the most replete private labs in the United States in the traditional herb market. We have here St. John’s wort, and what we do is we have an authenticated reference that’s identified by a botanist, and we compare this authenticated, identified St.

John’s wort with an incoming lot. That’s another way we can determine the identity of our botanicals. Our own in-house laboratory gives us the ability to go above and beyond testing requirements per the FDA. We’re able to test for pesticides, microbial contaminants, as well as physical hazards. It’s important to trust the company that you’re buying it from, so it’s not just the screen washing of what we’re doing here.

We’re actually backing up what we’re saying. Some of these botanicals we sell are scarce on the market. Some of them are very rare. Sometimes we can only get very small quantities. It’s really rewarding bringing these high-quality botanicals to our customers and knowing exactly how they’re grown and who’s growing them. So every harvest, every crop, every product, it’s fresh every single year.

It’s Mountain Rose’s policy not to have anything on the shelf for more than two years. Once it reaches that age, we destroy it and we compost it and that means we’re probably going to be out of stock, but we don’t want to sell an inferior product to our customers. We’re looking at when that crop is actually harvested, what month of the year, is that the precise time to take it or the best time to take it, and so Every year we do have the freshest crop, always. We do have the freshest material, always coming in the door and always being offered. Companies will warehouse material for years.

The oldest stock I’ve ever seen per a C of A was seven years old if you can believe that. One of the great things that I get to see is bringing in all the fresh crops. You know, we have the cumin seed that was just harvested a month ago and now I get the samples in and super spicy and potent. That’s what I want to take into my mortar and pestle and add to my dishes. When a customer opens their box and sees our herb, we guarantee that what they see in that box is colorful, fragrant, and tasty.
