Did you know that using an air fryer to prepare freshly roasted sweet potatoes can cut the baking time in half? Yes, you certainly can!
I’ve quickly found my new favorite way to cook sweet potatoes—this air fryer recipe. It cooks in about 30 minutes and consistently produces sweet potatoes with crispy skin and a soft, creamy core!
How to Make Baked Sweet Potato Air Fryer
Prepare: Rinse and scrub the sweet potatoes well. Using a fork, poke holes inside each potato (4-8 holes depending on the size of the potato).
Season: Leave a bit of water on the potatoes from rinsing so the salt sticks, and sprinkle about ½ teaspoon of salt on each. If using, drizzle with olive oil. Place the potatoes in the air fryer basket.
Air Fry: Set the air fryer to 390°F and air fry for about 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork tender. Flip the potatoes over halfway through cooking.
Serve: Once cooked through, remove from the air fryer, cut open, and top with your favorite toppings. See some topping ideas below!

FAQ
How do you make sweet potato fries taste better?
Just a few basic seasonings will work wonders! Sweet potatoes’ natural sweetness is wonderfully complemented by the hot cayenne and savory cumin. These sweet potato fries are great with tangy, creamy honey mustard for dipping, much like regular French fries.
Why are my sweet potato fries soggy in the air fryer?
There are two ways to prevent your air fryer’s sweet potato fries from getting soggy. First, try to get as much moisture from the potato skin as you can. To aid with it, quickly pat the sliced potatoes all over with a paper towel. Second, when air-frying, make sure there is enough space between each fry.
To create this dish, we collaborated with The Pioneer Woman, a 6.3-quart air fryer. We discovered that crispier results were obtained while cooking 1 1/2 pounds of sweet potato fries in two batches. We advise splitting this quantity of potatoes into three batches if your air fryer is smaller than 6.3 quarts.
How long do you cook sweet potato fries in the air fryer?
It takes roughly fifteen minutes for these sweet potato fries to get crispy and fully cooked. Just before serving, be sure to toss all of the cooked fries back in the air fryer for a few minutes, since you’ll need to cook the fries in batches to get them crispy. For everyone, that means hot, crispy fries!
Do I need to soak sweet potato fries before cooking?
No, is the response! Russet potatoes, which work best when soaked in water before cooking to remove starch from the surface area and fry to a crisp, are starchier than sweet potatoes. The air fryer’s steam output from soaking sweet potato fries could cause the fries to get soggy.
Do I need to peel sweet potatoes before cooking?
It’s all up to you on this. Sweet potatoes’ peel can add extra texture to each meal and include a wealth of minerals. Peel off the skin if you don’t like the texture or the way it tastes. If not, peel the skin in strips that alternate.
